WWII Bunker Conversion, Alexandra

DBA has been involved with the design for a conversion of a WWII bunker into a private residence.

The bunkers are constructed with triple skin brick and a solid concrete roof with concrete columns through the interior. The residence is being designed to celebrate the original structure and leave it visible where possible.

Two of the concrete columns have been removed and large steel beams installed above the roof to support the solid concrete roof.

A cavity remains between the triple brick skins allowing the internal skin to provide very good thermal mass. Floor to ceiling windows will allow for good solar gain and passive heating during the winter months.

Ventilation hatches on the exterior will remain in place, but they will be sealed to create a weathertight envelope.
